Snow Management 2003–5 work
in progress
Apart from the probably spectacular experience of being out at night
on the ski slopes with snowcats, the transformation from landscape to
image is equally exceptional. It is in fact a chain reaction of three
technical processes: Machine-Electrical Light-Camera. The recorded landscape
at every moment embodies one stage of a constantly changing land-art
piece which exists only through the light of the very machine that creates
and alters this land-art piece: the snowcat. Then the camera transforms – with
yet another technical process – that ephemeral land art into a
permanent picture. Thus, the resulting photographs seem to be withdrawn
from this world, a reminiscence of nature lost in a rapid reverie; unique,
solemn beauty as a result of applied technologies.
